Strategy, structure, and performance of U.S. manufacturing and service MNCs: a comparative analysis
Article Abstract:
The impact of strategy-structure fit on the performance of 144 multinational corporations (MNCs) was examined. MNC structures were first classified into five categories: worldwide functional, worldwide product division, international division, geographic region and matrix/mixed. MNC strategies were then identified along two dimensions: international market diversity and product diversity. An analysis of the strategy-structure fit confirmed that all MNCs, regardless of whether they were in the service or manufacturing sector, were found to structure their organizations according to the theoretical fit prescribed for the strategies they were pursuing. The strategy-structure fit, however, was observed to have no effect on the economic performance of service MNCs, while mixed results were observed for manufacturing MNCs.

Internationalization as a strategy process
Article Abstract:
A review of existing international business research is made. Internationalization is defined as the process of rising involvement in operations across national borders that results in changed positions and perspectives. The literature includes studies of this process as a series of stages, as determined by the structural and coordinative aspects of mutlinational corporations, and as a link between business strategy and structure. These three themes are flawed in terms of being too deterministic, empirically ambiguous and static, respectively. As a result, future research should concentrate on dominant internationalization modes, on the processes observed in multinational corporations, and on the embeddedness of internationalization in outer contexts.

Global strategy and population-level learning: the case of hard disk drives
Article Abstract:
Research presented concerns whether the nationality of the firm or industry conditions have a greater impact on a firm's global strategy, with particular attention to the hard disk drive industry. Data suggests that businesses from the same nation will likely maintain similar global strategies in the beginning, but with time, the industry as a unit creates a similar framework for action.
