The north of England tends to be associated with heavy industry, but the consumer and service sectors have been expanding in the region. Northern companies include Halifax, a bank which was previously a building society, and which faces competition in the UK mortgage market. Hotels and leisure company, Granada, is geared to the UK market and could be affected by a UK slowdown, but Granada's management has a good reputation. Great Universal Stores ranks first among UK mail order houses. Asda ranks third among UK food retailers. Other companies include Northern Foods and Airtours.

Large firms in the north of England have been associated with manufacturing, though there are more companies geared to the consumer and service sectors as the economy matures. Major companies include Halifax, which carried out a successful stock flotation in Jun 1997. Granada's interests include hotels and television broadcasting. Great Universal Stores is well placed in the home shopping market. Asda is a supermarket chain from the region which has a strong position in the sector.

Big can be beautiful
Article Abstract:
There large companies from a wide range of sectors in the Midlands region of England. These companies include Boots, a retail pharmacy chain, and Bass, a brewer which is also involved in restaurants. GKN is another large Midlands company and produces automobile parts as well as defense products. Lucas Varity is another automotive parts concern, while Roll-Royce produces aircraft engines. Cadbury Schweppes is a candy and beverage concern, and Severn Trent is a water utility.
