UK: GROWTH FOR OWN-LABEL BEERS
Article Abstract:
Own-label beer sales are growing: albeit very slowly. Most of the growth over the last year has been from the sale of own-brand stubby lagers - up 35% in volume terms over the last twelve months. The value lager sector is also doing well with 18% of the market and premium lager has 13%. But there is a long way to go. Own-label accounted for 44% of value grocery sales in the 12 months up to September 1999 whilst own-label beer only captures 10% of the take-home market. One company that specialises in providing own-label beers for retailers is Scottish Courage Brands. Not only does the company provide exclusive brands tailor-made to retailer requirements, but also tests existing brands for taste and quality enabling the team to keep abreast of new developments so that it can match new products.

Dairy Council shrugs off consumer threat
Article Abstract:
According to a survey conducted by the UK manufacturer of meat and dairy-free products, Haldane Foods, a third of consumers intend to reduce their intake of dairy products. This conclusion was based on the questioning of 2,050 people. However, the National Dairy Council has dismissed the study and said that the only change in demand it has noted was the tendency for consumers to choose lower fat varieties. The Haldane survey found that 13% of respondents said that they hardly ever ate dairy products, non-dairy alternatives were regularly purchased by 22% and 25% thought that supermarkets did not carry enough non-dairy alternatives.
