Tarmac
Article Abstract:
Chief executive of Tarmac, Sir Neville Simms re-stated his commitment to retaining the company's construction services division when announcing interim results in September, leading to a fall in the share price to just 77p. However merger talks with Aggregate Industries helped shares to rally and rise by 45% by December when talks collapsed. Tarmac has strengths such as a top position in UK aggregates, the fact that 25% of its turnover is generated in the US and benefits from the major Federal road repair programme. However there is still uncertainty over the company's strategic direction.

A bridge over troubled waters
Article Abstract:
The 3.3 billion Oresund Bridge and tunnel project linking Sweden and Denmark was approved by the Swedish government in 1994. The road and rail link should be open in 2000 and will be one of Europe's largest construction projects. Some 14 consortia are bidding for parts of the project, including firms from Sweden and Denmark. Public opinion in the two countries is against the scheme but industrialists argue that the bridge will be of economic benefit to the region, particularly southern Sweden and eastern Denmark.
