Television: a problem of definition
Article Abstract:
High-definition television (HDTV) sets offer televiewers sights and sounds comparable to those offered at movie theaters. Affordable HDTVs are not yet available in the mass market, but efforts are being made to bring film-like images and compact disc-quality sound to the homes of consumers. A television network in Japan has already been airing HDTV test broadcasts daily since 1991. Not to be outdone, the European Commission is supporting the development of HDTV in the EC. The Commission is pushing for the adoption of the HDMAC anologue transmission standard for HDTV. This is expected to create problems later on because the analogue technology is increasingly being overrun by the more advanced digital technology. The US FCC, for instance, is likely to go for a digital HDTV standard in 1993. The EC's support for the HDMAC, despite the many foreseen problems, has been drawing criticisms that the Commission is just wasting taxpayers' money.

A problem solved is a system selected
Article Abstract:
Selecting computer systems should begin with the analysis of problems rather than the development of a systems specification checklist. Problems analysis is essential in order to identify the areas where the presentsystem is inefficient. After problems are determined, these should be ranked according to significance, followed by the preparation of the systems specification document. The main benefit of the problem analysis is that from the outset, the needs of the end-users are considered. This contributes in gaining their approval of the new system. Problem analysis also helps when dealing with suppliers since they can be asked to show how their systems can solve problems instead of how their systems conform with the systems checklist. In addition, the services of a specialist consultant should be considered in order to narrow down the choices in selecting accounting products.
