The 1990 Mexico and Venezuela recapture clauses: an application of average price options
Article Abstract:
The Mexican and Venezuelan debt restructuring agreements of 1989-90 employ the use of recapture clauses to facilitate more favourable creditor terms in case oil price developments favour the debtor. The study shows how the recapture clauses can be evaluated by proving that they are the same as a series of oil futures option contracts. The use of indexed bonds along with derivative instruments would be an ideal way to improve international risk allocations and decrease debt payment defaults.
