Traditional values
Article Abstract:
Traditional stocks have become attractive again after a drop in price for technology stocks, and investors holding old technology stocks have benefited in particular. This move toward traditional stocks is especially important for a portfolio based on New York stocks, while the California portfolio has suffered less of a correction. This could be because most of the companies in the California portfolio have stocks held by institutions and management with confidence in the growth prospects of these companies.

The 2.3 trillion dollar question
Article Abstract:
There is a debate on the impact of a drop in Nasdaq stock prices on the US economy, and whether growth is likely to slow. There may be no serious impact on consumption, and technology stock prices could recover. Interest rates may also be raised in May 2000.

Defending high values
Article Abstract:
High valuations for US equities could be explained by capital becoming more productive, though this appplies to a few large companies. Return on equity drops to 15% from 19% with the top 20 firms excluded. Earnings could be better than forecast for companies geared to the domestic economy due to strong demand and lower prices for imports. Bond yields could also drop in 1998. A drop in bond yields is unlikely to occur at the same time as earnings growth, however, since strong demand would help earnings, but would tend to push up bond yields.
