The Bishop's letter: implications for U.S. management
Article Abstract:
A 1986 report by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, 'Economic Justice for All: Catholic Social Teaching and the US Economy', emphasizes four problem areas: (1) employment, (2) poverty, (3) food and agriculture, and (4) international economic concerns. In relating Christian beliefs to current economic problems, the Bishops call for a renewed commitment to economic justice. The report calls for enlightened stewardship of property and resources, primacy of labor over capital, preferential options for the poor, and for multinational corporations to act responsibly towards Third World nations. Three possible courses of action for business managers in light of the Bishops' letter are: (1) speaking one's mind on value issues within one's organization, (2) advocating some of the Bishops' concerns within professional organizations, and (3) indicating within one's community that the social implications of economic decisions should be considered.

The evolving marketing concept, competitive intensity and organizational performance
Article Abstract:
Marketing educators generally assume in their teaching that there is little inconsistency between adherence to the marketing concept and the stakeholder concept. Some assume that the latter is a logical extension of the former but there has been no empirical analysis of this issue. In this paper, research based on the perceptions of Fortune 500 executives is presented which focuses on this issue. Of particular concern are their views concerning the future business environment, organizational conduct and expected performance in 1995. This data is used to empirically examine the inseparability of the marketing concept and stakeholder concept. In addition, the relationship of the competitive environment upon these philosophies as well as upon perceived organizational performance is empirically investigated and discussed. Balancing corporate profits and ethics: a matrix approach
Article Abstract:
Society increasingly is demanding that, in their business conduct, businesses meet both economic and social criteria, bringing the question of ethics and corporate profitability to the fore. Business ethics typically is a problem for management, but many ethical dilemmas can be avoided through the employment of the parallel planning matrix. The parallel planning matrix allows social concerns to be incorporated into strategic and tactical planning. The parallel planning matrix clarifies the relationship between ethics and corporate profit, and forces managers to deal with ethical concerns in their business conduct. The parallel planning matrix compares profitable and ethical outcomes of a business strategy though the deployment of ethics and profitability measures, which locates an action on the matrix to facilitate analysis and discussion.
