The phrase 'The Michaels' refers to four graphic designers from San Francisco bearing the name Michael. Michael Manwaring's works include the monumental Casting sign outside the Disney employment office and sculptures in San Jose Arena. Michael Vanderbyl's works for Esprit ranged from interior design for trade shows to textile design for bed and bath line. Michael Mabry's fame as a graphic designer and illustrator led to commissions, such as textile designs for Esprit Sport. Michael Patrick Cronan works as a print designer and is the creative director of Cronan Artefact.

Capsule profiles of forty designers and companies known for design innovation are presented. The fields covered include graphics, products, furniture, automobiles and technology.
