The NCC: at your service
Article Abstract:
The National Computing Centre (NCC) was established in 1966 by Harold Wilson's Labour government to promote the use of information technology and to serve as a country-wide users' organization. Since 1966, the NCC has changed from a government-funded organization to a membership-based one which finances itself through its commercial activities. The NCC has a budget of 16 million pounds sterling and has a staff of approximately 400. There are four major divisions: training, software packages, open systems, and consultancy. Accountants can use the NCC as a source of information on information technology. The NCC can be particularly useful to small- to medium-sized accounting firms interested in computerization. The NCC is based in Manchester, but there are branch offices in Birmingham, Bristol, London, and Glasgow.

Work patterns: back to the drawing board
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales surveyed 546 members for their views on the major issues concerning the recruitment and retention of women in the accounting profession. Of the respondents, 80% cited flexible working hours as the most important issue in returning to work after having a family. The percentage of women entering the accounting profession as a proportion of the total increased to 35.8% in 1990 from 18.1% in 1977. Women accounted for 31.5% of the new members and 11.1% of all members in 1990. The greater proportion of women in accounting shows the need for firms to offer flexible working schedules to working members to retain women in the profession.
