The WM story: Scotland takes on the world
Article Abstract:
The 700-employee WM Company (Edinburgh, Scotland) offers performance measurement services to institutional investors. It began as stockbrokers Wood Mackenzie's computer services division, and eventually became a separate entity owned by former Wood Mackenzie partners. After a management decision to become international, the company became a subsidiary of Bankers Trust Company of New York. WM offers four separate but associated services: portfolio valuation and analysis, performance measurement, investment accounting and reporting, and global custody. Annual company growth has been between 20% and 25% for some time, but Chairman and Managing Director Dugald Eadie expects more dramatic growth over the next 10 years.

Taking the BES decision
Article Abstract:
The 10-year Business Expansion Schemes (BES) offer the means for investors to lessen their tax obligations. The schemes were introduced in Apr 1983 and will expire in Dec 1993. Tax relief is available to UK residents who have invested in companies or funds eligible under BES regulations and have retained their BES shares for no less than five years. Investment in enterprise zone property, likewise offers considerable tax relief. One hundred percent initial allowance is available to investors who have put their money in zone properties within 10 years of the zone's existence. Unlike BES investments which have a limit of 40,000 pounds sterling, there is no cap on investments on enterprise zone property.
