The Wisconsin integrated cropping systems trial: combining agroecology with production agronomy
Article Abstract:
The state of Wisconsin started two large-scale cropping system trials in 1989 for a comparative study of six alternative production systems related to productivity, profitability, and environmental impact. The project progressed into developing two learning centers with emphasis on agroecology and production agriculture. The project has been designed and managed by a group of farmers, extension agents as well as research personnel. The direction of this trial has been changed by increasing the collaborators to include producers and extension agents.

Constant goal, changing tactics: a Wisconsin dairy farm start-up
Article Abstract:
The progress of a start-up alternative dairy farm in Wisconsin is studied. The owners initially established a 97-ha mixed farm with dairy and cash crops in 1991. In 1992, they experimented with management-intensive grazing on 14 ha which they expanded to 23 ha in 1993. Management-intensive grazing was adopted exclusively by 1994. The farm became profitable by the end of 1995 with annual Net Farm Income from Operations rising from $21,500 in 1991-92 to $54,000 in 1994-95.

Performance, economics, and adoption of cover crops in Wisconsin cash grain rotations: on-farm trials
Article Abstract:
Four cover crop systems were compared to evaluate their agronomic and economic performance in on-farm trials in Wisconsin. The cover crop options are companion-seeded red clover, sequentially seeded hairy vetch, sequentially seeded oat and untilled fallow. With farmers' participation, these crop sequences were evaluated based on ground cover, biomass and nitrogen yield, corn/grain yield, and N-fertilizer replacement value. The results are discussed.
