The debate on ethics must continue
Article Abstract:
The Naval Academy has been the subject of an ongoing debate with regard to its instruction on character development, leadership and ethics. It is argued that the Navy has not achieved the kind of balance that is required to furnish Academy students with the type of classroom and real world experiences that would help ensure their success on chaotic 21st-century battlefields. This success will not be brought about by an understanding of Kantian ethics. Rather, it will be achieved through old-fashioned, good leadership fostered by great examples, both living and dead, experiences generated by a knowledgeable faculty, and an Academy that allows the freedom to fail but ensures accountability and, therefore, allows learning to occur.

Another great white fleet?
Article Abstract:
Pres Theodore Roosevelt was to demonstrate that the US was a world power by sending 16 US Navy battleships around the world on Dec 16, 1907. Roosevelt had several objectives in sending what was to be called 'The Great White Fleet' overseas. The fleet was to return to the US on Feb 22, 1909, augmented by four more battleships and five cruisers that joined it when it was 1,000 miles away from the US. The Navy was to go on after that to become the most powerful in the world. It would be appropriate for the US to send a battle fleet around the world again as the 21st century begins.

Infrastructure networks are key vulnerabilities
Article Abstract:
The US Armed Forces relies on a complex system of interwoven infrastructure networks within the US and host countries for information, services and resources. These networks include financial, potable water, petroleum, transportation, telecommunications and electrical power systems, and they support considerably more than just information exchanges and weapons systems deployment activities. Knowing the vulnerabilities of these key networks is essential especially as network- centric warfare evolves.
