The efficiency effects of bank mergers: an overview of case studies of nine mergers
Article Abstract:
A variation in performance outcome was noted with regards to nine bank mergers studied. Four out of nine bank mergers investigated were highly successful in enhancing cost efficiency while the rest were not. All of the mergers were able to achieve marked cost cutting improvement in connection with premerger projections. Meanwhile, difficulty in combining data processing systems and operations was the most usual and crucial problem encountered by merging banks.

The productivity effects of bank mergers: evidence from the UK building societies
Article Abstract:
Mergers in the banking industry in the UK elicit favorable changes in terms of the participants' productivity. In a study conducted on an unbalanced panel of 93 building societies in the UK from 1981 to 1993, financial results of the institutions involved in acquisitions or mergers show significant gains after a respective deal. The gains have been observed to continue growing after the deregulation period.
