The filling in the training sandwich
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales is receiving comments on its consultative (Blue Paper) report entitled, "Effective Education and Training for the 21st Century." Following the review and analysis of such comments, a White Paper will be issued by the Institute to recommend methods of training accountants. These methods are expected to include: (1) front loading, a training schedule comprised of introductory teaching in a training office, twelve months of full-time educational studies in the accounting field, and an uninterrupted period of practice, followed by assessment and certification, (2) sandwich training, so named because the trainee would receive full-time educational assignments before and after a period of practical training under contract to an accountancy firm, and (3) block release training, which is the name for Britain's current training programs for chartered accountants. One of the reasons for these reviews of accountancy training programs is that under the current system, an individual can train for years, only to be denied certification. However, under the proposed programs, it may be that the same results could occur. Various polls of British accounting students show them favoring the front loading system.
