The influence of perceptual 'set' on the detection of motorcyclists using daytime headlights
Article Abstract:
Many motorcyclists develop a perceptual 'set' for detecting motorcyclists using daytime headlights. Motorcyclists who voluntarily use daytime headlights might endanger those not using lights. Laboratory experiments revealed that headlight-using motorcyclists are more quickly detected than motorcyclists not using their light, especially at a significant distance. Detection of an unlit motorcyclist was significantly delayed by repeated exposure to headlight-using motorcyclists. This effect occurred when only 60 percent of the motorcyclists were using headlights.

Aberrant driving behaviour: errors and violations
Article Abstract:
Research on the psychological behavior of auto drivers and the relationship between this behavior and driving violations and errors suggests that a distinction between violations and errors is valid. A questionnaire given to Australian drivers and used to gauge driving behavior revealed that males were more likely to intentionally commit driving violations, while female aberrant behaviour was more likely the result of driver error. Age was also a factor in driving safety.

Behavioural effects of mobile telephone use during simulated driving
Article Abstract:
Simulated driving was used to study the effects of using a mobile telephone on driving performance. Instrument manipulation contributed to driving deterioration on slippery roads. Male drivers exerted better control than female subjects under difficult conditions. Hands-free telephones do not pose a risk while driving, although drivers must exercise caution in situations where more attention is needed.
