Article Abstract:
The impact of the Rule 23d(c) of the European Patent Convention (EPC) on human embryonic stem (hES) cell patenting strategy in Europe is examined and the implications for the biotech industry are highlighted. Analysis of European hES cell patents has illustrated the way the dynamics of the regulatory environment are shaping current patenting practice.

Banked blood is in great demand and continues to outpace the supply, especially in developing countries. A technology that permits for the first time the extensive expansion of CD34(super +) stem cells and their total conversion ex vivo into mature enucleated red blood cells is described.
