The right thing and how to do it
Article Abstract:
There is a concern in the British accounting community that recent accounting controversies may encourage young accountants to succumb to the temptation of engaging in unethical behaviors. To find out if there is a basis to this concern, the University of Nottingham's School of Management and Finance conducted a study to ascertain how training organizations impart ethical standards to their accounting students. Results show that the respondents feel they have a responsibility in the development of the ethical attitudes of students. They claim that their training and monitoring activities teach students and newly qualified members how to act in a manner that is in line with the ethical guidelines of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. They suggest that the best way to hone ethical awareness is through a combination of formal training and job experience. Recommendations are discussed.
