Short-cycle manufacturing was the solution offered by a Motorola operations section manager when his project leader asked him for help on how to solve a production problem. The latter encountered problems when he added more workers when a part testing program failed. Animosity and work-related conflicts arose with the arrival of the new employees. The manager believed that the solution lies in empowering the original workers in doing cycle-time reduction work. For him, short-cycle manufacturing would allow the team to work together and achieve measurable reduction in cycle times.

Team competition spurs continuous improvement at Motorola
Article Abstract:
Motorola Inc. instituted a total customer satisfaction (TCS) team competition in 1989 as part of its continuous improvement program. The idea for the competition was sparked by a visit of senior Motorola executives to Japan wherein they were introduced to the concept of TCS. TCS can be a goal of any team in a company even if they are far from the ultimate customers, as each team may consider the team in a subsequent process as an internal customer. The process of establishing the TCS competition and the criteria for judging TCS teams are presented.

Five Phases of Design is a formal design system developed by Motorola's Space and Systems Technology Group (SSTG) to guarantee that the designs being produced by concurrent engineering design groups are implementable. The methodology describes in detail what needs to be done in every design phase. Every design phase ends with an evaluation by the chief engineers and a checklist that compels manufacturing team members to provide inputs necessary to ensure the feasibility of the design cycle.
