The shell game: Too many museums are investing in star architecture at the expense of art

The art museums are designed by the architects into spectacular buildings that become the most visible part of their institutional brand and it places the architect in a unique position of power and influence, but the success of the museum does not depend on architecture alone. The museum must have sufficient funds to create stellar exhibitions, build a distinctive graphic identity, develop systems that guide visitors through the building and maintain membership communications.

A breed apart

Reed Kram, an American media designer, and Clemens Weisshaar, a product designer, have developed a new kind of furniture called the Breeding Tables, which were conceived at the 2002 Milan furniture fair. The production phase for the Breeding Tables was based on a software mutation and by directing laser cutting and steel-bending machines to shape the tables.
