The supply of graduates - the good news
Article Abstract:
The much heralded shortage of graduates in the UK is illusory: evidence strongly indicates that the numbers of students in higher education programs will continue to rise. UK Secretary of State for Education and Science Kenneth Baker announced a policy of doubling the numbers of students in higher education in 25 years, the numbers of students admitted to higher education programs reached record levels in 1990, university bids under the fund allocation system of the Universities Fund Council indicate a 17% rise in undergraduates and a 30% increase in postgraduates between 1989 and 1990, and the Department of Education and Science has revised its projections of student numbers upwards.

PIs v. real performance
Article Abstract:
A British government report published in 1985 encouraged universities to develop reliable performance indicators. The problem is that performance has traditionally been hard to judge in the public sector. In Jul 1986 the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals issued a list of 24 performance indicators. Many of these proposals are unworkable or irrelevant in their present state.
