The tracker's dilemma
Article Abstract:
There are a number of United Kingdom stock price indices that can be used by tracker funds, but the FTSE All-Share accounts for a large proportion of funds under management. The FTSE 100 accounts for 25 funds compared with 18 funds for the FTSE All-Share, but only a third of money invested. The FTSE performed better than the All-Share in 1998, but the reverse is true for 1999. Both indices have similar levels of volatility. It tends to be more expensive to replicate the All-Share than the FTSE 100, though larger funds benefit from economies of scale.
