The wilder shores of equity
Article Abstract:
Funds investing in emerging markets can face a number of problems such as delays in registration which means that shares cannot always be sold rapidly. Investors in India face lack of a centralised settlement system, and investors in Russia may also face registration problems. There is also a lack of disclosure in Russia, while hidden fees may be a problem in China. Tax laws can also be changed to the detriment of foreign investors. Professionals specializing in emerging markets tend to be more successful than private investors.
