Biotechnology company Sangamo Biosciences holds key patents and trade secrets on the design of zinc fingers and zinc finger chimeric endonucleases (ZFNs) as well as on their uses in drug discovery and the regulation of gene expression. Academic laboratories are putting pressure on the Richmond, California-based company to make its technologies widely available.

The problem with potency

The biotech industry in 2005 hopes to build on successes of monoclonal antibodies in oncology and inflammatory disease. However, it is indicated that expansion of monoclonal antibodies to new therapeutic indications, particularly autoimmune disease, might be less straightforward than for some trailblazing monoclonal products.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the monoclonal antibody Vectibix (panitumumab) for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-expressing colorectal cancers. Vectibix was developed by replacing a mouse's antibody genes with that of a human.
