Thistle Hotels plans a share issue. The company previously known as Mount Charlotte and was hit by a downturn in the business cycle shortly after acquiring Thistle Hotels. Brierley Investments acquired Thistle Hotels in 1991 but left the company to be run by Thistle's management. The UK hotel cycle has some time to run and Thistle has low occupancy rates so there is space for geared growth. The company aims to raise between 500 million pounds sterling and 700 million pounds from its share placing.

The Slovenian tourist industry was worth $930 million in 1994 and the figure could be increased if private foreign visitors are included. There was a 23% increase in foreign visitor-nights in hotels in 1994 compared with 1993. Investment is being carried out in spas in order to develop spa tourism. Slovenia emphasizes that it is part of central Europe in order to establish a distance with former Yugoslavia. The government aims to plan tourism and avoid overdevelopment in the countryside.

Romania has increased the number of tourist visitors to 6.5 million in 1994 compared with 5.5 million in 1991. Tourism accounted for 2.3% of gross domestic product in 1994 and the government aims to increase this to between 8% and 10%. Attractions include spas and hunting, and the government aims to promote hunting holidays. Foreign investment in hotels will help the industry, and foreign companies involved include Hilton International and Le Meridien.
