Three weddings and a funeral
Article Abstract:
Trafficmaster saw a rise in its stock price to 15 pounds sterling in summer 1999 from 4.2 pounds in Mar 1998. The old stocks have been divided by the company into four new stocks so the purchase price should be divided likewise. This means that the purchase price was 1.05 pounds per stock, and they can be sold for 5 pounds each. BTG stocks have performed less well. Torotrak is a BTG subsidiary that was demerged, and both stock prices added together have dropped in value. Marks and Spencer stocks have also dropped, as have Freeserve stocks, though they rose before falling.

There are still good bargains to be sniffed out
Article Abstract:
Value portfolios can follow principles set out by Ben Graham, a famous US investor. He aimed to find bargains such as companies that have common stock selling at under the value of the net working capital of the company. Stock prices have moved away from balance sheet values following a bull market in stocks, which makes investment selection more difficult in the 1990s. Possible contenders for 1999 include FII, Tie Rack and Yorkshire group.
