Tiger plague
Article Abstract:
Stock markets in Pacific Basin countries excluding Japan have underperformed from 1994 to 1997, and their recovery in 1997 appears to be faltering. Hong Kong and China have been exceptions due to China's high levels of economic growth. The rise in the value of the US dollar is onec reason for this underperformance. Optimists argue that exports and corporate earnings will improve in the region, leading to a better performance for shares. A rise in US interest rates could still hit these markets.

The bursting of the Asian bubble
Article Abstract:
Share prices in southeast Asia fell in 1995, and have reached levels previously seen in 1992 to 1993. They have been affected by concern over overheating which involves inflation and trade deficits, leading to increases in interest rates. The Mexican financial critis also led to concern over balance of payments problems, leading to the sale of Thai, Malaysian and Indonesian stocks by foreign investors. Interest rates could still rise, but these markets could recover by late 1996.

South east Asia: focus on growth
Article Abstract:
US interest rates may fall, which would boost US bonds and south east Asian equity values, according to Crosby. Hong Kong is the most sensitive market likely to be affected by this. Interest rates are likely to rise over the longer term, however. Share prices in Singapore are likely to rise due to growth fundamentals and liquidity. Thailand is likely to see earnings growth improve in 1998 and monetary policy should be eased over the year from Mar 1996.
