Time to get to grips with Crest
Article Abstract:
Crest is a new UK electronic share settlement system and was launched in Jul 1997. The system should be fully implemented in April 1997 and most quoted companies will have moved to Crest. Private investors are likely to find the new system more expensive and less convenient. They can retain paper share certificates but are likely to be charged more. Nominee accounts can help cut dealing costs but involve some loss of rights. Sponsored membership is an option for frequent traders to consider.

New issues: newcomers funk it
Article Abstract:
The UK market for new share issues has been affected by a worldwide drop in share prices in early Dec 1996. There is also concern about the quality of some new issues. Fund managers are warier of investing in new issues than they were in early 1996. Uncertainty has led to a drop in prices and companies seeking to float prior to an election in 1997 may accept a drop in their valuation in order to carry out the share issue. Investors may obtain bargains but they should be selective.

New issues: flotation fever
Article Abstract:
More than 40 companies have joined the chief UK stock market to may 1996, compared with 86 companies for full-year 1996. A further 27 companies have joined the Alternative Investment Market. Investors may be buying due to sentiment rather than reason, and they have less access to new issues since stock market rule changes allow companies to sell shares only to institutions. An increase in new issues has also been associated with a drop in the stock market.
