Article Abstract:
Two UK electric utilities are waiting decisions by the authorities on bids. South Western Electricity faces a bid from Southern Electric International and the deal is likely to receive approval. Manweb faces a bid by Scottish Power, which is likely to be referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC). The new grouping would hold a stake of 14% in the electricity distribution market for England and Scotland. The regulator, Stephen Littlechild, will advise the Office of Fair Trading which in turn advises the Department of Trade and Industry whether its should refer the deal to the MMC.
