Lifee and health insurer Torchmark Corp closed its price for the trading week ending last May 8, 1992 from 1 1/2 to 57 3/4 with an increase in its Mar 1992 quarter earnings of $1.26 per share. This favored its bid to buy back 1.15 million share at $54 per share on last Apr 28, 1992. Low interest rates hinder any proceeds on investments on the short-term basis, but favors health premium on the long-term stand. Torchmark Corp pays $1.28 dividend on the 50 million shares. Institutions hold 51% of the shares. On Mar 20, 1992 Dir C.B. Hudson procured 2,000 shares at 59 1/8.

The decision comes after Coventry suffered heavy losses that resulted from expenses incurred by ASC's utilization of automated office systems. Morgan Keegan's Joseph Millsap rates Coventry stock a Buy with a value of $32 to $34 per share.
