Trade agreements and incentives for environmental quality: a Western Hemisphere example
Article Abstract:
Developed countries and developing economies can profitably forge agreements in international trade that would redound to the improvement of environmental quality. A theoretical example is used demonstrating that the US can provide three Latin American countries with special trading concessions for their fruit juice exports in return for the latter's implementation of a pesticides policy. It is shown that the expenses incurred by the pesticides program are offset by the benefits gained by preferential access to foreign markets.
