Computers in Design and Manufacturing: A Research Briefing
Article Abstract:
Areas for further research into the use of computers in design and manufacturing are detailed by a panel of experts organized by the National Research Council. Mechanical technologies and research goals are reviewed. Computers in design handle repetitive operations and analyze complex problems quickly. Computers in manufacturing are involved with group technology, planning and control systems, automated materials handling, computer-aided manufacturing, and robotics. The total integration of computer systems involving design and manufacturing will increase productivity. Requirements for an integrated system are outlined along with recommendations for research. Other research topics include modeling, human-computer interface, expert systems, information managemet, and devices. Issues regarding research support mechanisms concern universities, education, government, and technology transfer.

The United States government is the largest single source of productivity information in this country. Specific inquiries can be made to the Federal Information Center (FIC). Books, articles, and reports are listed as are guides to performance measurement, productivity periodicals, business periodicals, trade, technical and specialty journals. Businesses should acquire useful information, make it available to management and use it as a tool to improving productivity.
