Brewing up a storm
Article Abstract:
New Zealand brewer Lion Nathan is expanding into China in response to declining beer consumption in its traditional markets. Although it continues to dominate the Australian markets, the company recognizes that it must find new beer markets to sustain its growth. It is convinced that the key to its continued success is entry into the huge Chinese market. At present, beer consumption per head in China is only 12 liters annually. This may not seem much when compared to 100 liters per head in New Zealand, but it should be noted that the Chinese population is 400 times bigger than that of New Zealand. In addition, Lion Nathan management is convinced that China will become the world's largest beer market by the year 2000. To position itself for the market's boom, the company has decided to invest in two breweries in the Wuxi region on the Yangtse River delta.
