Boiler room hi-jinx: timeshare sellers got more than they bargained for from Vacation Exchange International
Article Abstract:
Vacation Exchange International, a Nevada property management firm, offered to help people identify timesharing opportunities in condominiums and summer homes in the Lake Tahoe area. Vacation Exchange used telemarketing and direct marketing techniques to attract a customer base, charging $195 per customer for its location services. However, this company was exposed as a fraud in 1984, when it was found that it had taken in over $500,000 in fees, while performing none of its advertised services. The investigation into the fraudulent practices of Vacation Exchange International was organized by the U.S. Postal Service office in Oakland, California and the California Department of Real Estate.

Mini catalogs generate sales
Article Abstract:
The use of mini catalogs as advertising inserts can increase profits, enhance consumer awareness, and cut direct response advertisers' expenses. Several companies have unveiled eight- and 16-page, mini catalogs, with four colors, for use as postcard decks. The combination of card decks with mini cards has helped form a new media, as the mini cards have dominated the deck for solo mailing use.
