Eastern European emerging market funds performed well from 1996 to 1997, especially Mercury ST Eastern Europe, which rose by 81% in this period. Hungary, Russia and Poland look set to make the largest gains, according to Daiwa. Investment in Russia involves risks but there are bargains. Investor confidence has been a problem for the Czech Republic stock market. Hungary has performed well, and Poland is showing growth despite problems such as inflation.

Pot luck fund killed off
Article Abstract:
Conroy Industries has had to close down a scheme invting investors to invest in Futurom Funds, with a minimum investment of of 625 pounds sterling. The investment was to be directed to two geared funds betting on the Standard and Poor's 500 index. The United Kingdom Financial Services Authority (FSA) has closed down the scheme, and Christian Conroy, who runs the scheme, has to return funds to investors. Uncashed checks have to be sent to the FSA.
