US economy: the wagon still has four wheels
Article Abstract:
Predictions about the negative impact of the Asian financial crisis on the US economy have been exaggerated. Major institutes and analysts were compelled to reduce their expectations of American economic growth for 1998 by as much as 1% due to the difficulties encountered by the Asian tigers the previous year. The currency devaluations in the region have made Asian exporters more competitive while US exporters have had to struggle to survive in the economically devastated region. Despite the direct trade effects, however, a number of factors could contribute to the continued stability of the US economy. These include the robust US bond market, increased consumer confidence, stable interest rates, reduced dollar oil prices, and lower commodity prices. The possibility of transferring Asian operations to Europe is another plus point.

Money to lend but no one to lend it to?
Article Abstract:
Deregulation of the banking sector in Great Britain has eroded the mortgage market share of building societies, or savings banks. Retail banks and specialist mortgage providers have been faster, more flexible and more efficient at providing mortgage loans than the building societies. Banks and mortgage specialists are reluctant to give small loans, or loans for property that is not readily marketable. Banks, insurance companies, and mortgage specialists now dominate the mortgage finance market in the more affluent south of England, which has contributed to a 15 % increase in housing prices in 1987.
