US gives green light to telecoms free-for-all
Article Abstract:
US telecoms legislation will change the structure of the industry in a more profound way than any change since AT and T was forced to hive off its local networks. The Telecommunications bill will bring about deregulated telecoms services and any company will be able to compete in any market involving telecommunications. Partnerships, takeovers and mergers are likely as companies seek to achieve critical mass. Large amounts of capital expenditure may lead to pressure on telecoms companies' financial positions.

National Grid's telecoms arm faces rough flotation
Article Abstract:
National Grid faces difficulties with its flotation of Energis due to market conditions which have affected Ionica, another telecoms company which has carried out a flotation. Energis has a market value estimated at between 738 million pounds sterling and 941 million pounds, while National Grid is raising some 200 million pounds through the sale of Energis. The National Grid network has been used to lay fiber-optic cable which gives Energis an advantage compared to some telecoms companies.

BT reverses the charges
Article Abstract:
British Telecommunications (BT) and MCI are continuing with their merger plan though BT has achieved a price cut of $3 billion. The merger is not certain to be ratified when BT stockholders vote. Major investors have obtained information on some key changes from the internet rather than BT. Critics argue that BT is paying too much and should abandon the deal despite penalties for doing so. BT has also been criticised for having an arrogant attitude to its stockholders.
