Un autre politique
Article Abstract:
The new Frenchpresident is likely to be Jacques Chirac, following elections in 1995. French currency and bondmarkets are sceptical about Chirac's economic policies. He argues for a drop in income tax, a risein wages and increased spending on social security, all of which are reflationary. France wouldlose its hope of becoming co-equal with Germany if such a strategy were pursued. There areconstraints on Chirac since he is unlikely to be able to promote economic growth and keep astrong franc.

100-day wonder
Article Abstract:
Jean Arthuis has replaced Alain Madelin as the French finance minister. There were differences of opinion between Madelin and Alain Juppe, prime minister. Plans to cut French rates of interest are affected by the weakness of the French franc. The French government is also seeking to reduce the budget deficit and the new finance minister has only 6 weeks to develop a budget for 1996. Arthuis is seen as in favor of a more consensual approach to reducing France's deficit than Madelin was.

France: gnomes at work
Article Abstract:
The French government has blamed currency speculation for pressure on the French franc. Political problems in France have led to pressure on the franc including corruption charges which threatened the French prime minister, Alain Juppe. This threat has subsided but there are still tensions over the franc. There is concern that the government may not be able to maintain control over the budget at the same time as boosting growth and reducing unemployment.
