Banque Nationale de Paris
Article Abstract:
Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) was set up in 1966 through the merger of two major French banks. BNP is stronger in traditional lending as opposed to capital markets and is present in 76 nations in addition to France. Critics argue that BNP has done too little to cut costs, though the bank is also faced with overcapacity in the banking industry in France. Margins in French banking also tend to be lower than average for European banks, and loan demand from companies has been bearish.

BankAmerica
Article Abstract:
BankAmerica was the biggest US bank in 1945 but other institutions have since taken over its role. The bank is still a major player in the US market and is aided by the strong economy of the West Coast. A share buy-back program has started in 1996 and the bank has reduced costs in proportion to revenue. Consumer debt default has risen and net margins on interest have become tighter. The bank has excess capital which is likely to be returned to its shareholders.
