Five fleets: around the world with the Nimitz
Article Abstract:
The first week of Feb, 1999, proved to be the most difficult period for the Nimitz (CVN-68) during Operation Southern Watch. Nimitz personnel were worn out after nearly four months on battle alert and were experiencing an overwhelming longing to return home to the US. However, the carrier was allowed to depart the Arabian Gulf on Feb 8, 1999, and sail directly to Mayport, FL, after being replaced by the carrier Independence (CV-62) and its battle group.

Parting with the Prowler
Article Abstract:
The US Marine Corps' aging EA-6B Prowlers are frequently deployed in joint operations that it is doubtful whether the aircraft will last beyond 2010. The Prowlers are in high demand mainly by virtue of their tactical electronic warfare capability. To ensure, however, that the airframes will survive another 10 to 15 years, the Corps should give up the Prowlers and integrate them into the expeditionary 'purple squadrons' of the US Air Force.
