Using future search conferences to achieve the APHIS vision
Article Abstract:
The Dept. of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) faced demands for change in 1993 on account of the Government Performance and Results Act, the National Performance Review and the largest reorganization within the agency itself. To focus its change efforts, APHIS used a 'future search conference,' a gathering-together of groups of people to plot organizational direction from a whole systems perspective. This has resulted in the implementation of fundamental changes in the organization's mission, processes, technologies, structures and behaviors.

The evolution of a world-class factory at Harris Farinon
Article Abstract:
Harris Corp.'s Farinon Div. implemented a reengineering strategy aimed at improving its declining performance. The company began by creating a plan focusing on customer satisfaction, continuous process improvement and new product development. Investments were then made in training, total quality management and self-managed teams. The plan increased sales by two-thirds and reduced order delivery cycle times from six months to 18 days.
