Vastgotmodellen: Sweden's sustainable alternative for swine production

Article Abstract:

Swedish farmers, faced with a government ban on subtherapeutic use of antibiotics for livestock and strict animal welfare laws, developed the Vastgotmodellen system of swine production which depends on straw, the natural behavior of animals, dynamics of group housing, and good husbandry skills. The system has proved to be a success, resulting in increased pig reproduction, and growth performance. The system is more suitable for feeder or weaner pigs of 25 to 30 kg. The system is best suited for farms of modest size.

Environmental policy and swine manure management: waste not or want not?

Article Abstract:

Waste management is an integral part of livestock production and should not be treated as a trivial matter. A comparison of the manure management strategies employed by two different producers from North Carolina and Iowa shows how effective manure management can help policymakers implement more effective livestock policies. In North Carolina, manure is not wanted and is applied to as little land as possible while in Iowa, manure is maximized to the fullest by applying it to higher value crops.

Economic analysis

Article Abstract:

A 10-year study was conducted in North Carolina to evaluate the profitability of four crop rotations and levels of chemical inputs. The crop rotations are continuous corn or sorghum, corn/wheat-soybean and corn/wheat-soybean/corn/clover hay. These were managed with levels of chemical inputs based on current management practices, low-input management and medium-input management. The results of the study are discussed.
