Virtual reality and federal taxes

Article Abstract:

The concept of virtual reality has entered the taxation arena particularly in the area of business planning. The disregard of business entities is not a new tax concept, but new types of entities or transactions are arising or being discussed and causing the IRS to be concerned, especially where international entities or transactions are involved. Virtual mergers and synthetic leases are among the new virtual tax reality.

Several changes in tax law relating to estate planning occurred in 1998 which should be taken into account when making 1999 plans. Most changes were not dramatic and several were technical corrections to 1997 legislation. Notable changes made through case law, IRS rulings, or technical corrections include the areas of generation-skipping tax, valuation, valuation discounts, and completed gifts.
