Waiting for the great leap forward
Article Abstract:
China was seen as an attractive market because of its size, but investors have discovered that some 800 million of the total population of 1.2 billion live on low incomes in rural areas. Average incomes are also relatively low in Shanghai and Beijing. Car manufacturers have been among disappointed investors. Some companies are performing well in China, and there are from 300 to 400 British companies investing in China. They include Bass, a brew, ICI, involved in paint ventures, and London International Group, in a condom JV.

RJB awaits government mining subsidy decision
Article Abstract:
RJB Mining is delaying the announcement of its results for 1999 until the british government decides on subsidies for the coal mining industry. It is thought that RJB Mining is seeking 70 million pounds sterling. The company's stock price has been affected by this uncertainty, and RJB Mining is expected to report a loss of some 130 million pounds sterling, compared with a profit of 40 million pounds sterling for 1998. European Union rules on subsidies are likely to affect the government's decision.

Selective investment
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom investors can defer their tax payments by using offshore investments and can even avoid tax by this means. Offshore investments are not suitbable for all investors, but they can be useful for people living abroad or who wish to defer payments for other reasons. Offshore investments tend to be used to benefit from capital growth, since earnings can be reinvested tax-free. They can be used by investors who have gone abroad to retire and who need an income.
