Wanted! Newly qualifieds
Article Abstract:
Newly qualified chartered accountants face favorable employment prospects in 1995. Job opportunities in UK industry abound, although the level of recruitment activity in Scotland does not seem to be as high as in other parts of the region. Accounting firms are also competing fiercely to attract new talents and to retain their existing staff. To achieve these goals, the firms are rethinking their career development policies and programs, boosting salaries, and offering creative incentives. In many of the leading accounting firms in the UK, newly qualifieds are given the opportunity to take secondments in industry domestically and in public practice overseas. Salaries of newly qualifieds differ according to the location and size of the firm, as well as to the individual's qualifications. London salaries range between 21,000 pounds sterling and 32,000 pounds, while salaries in the regions range between 17,000 pounds and 28,000 pounds.

Fully committed to part-time work
Article Abstract:
Part-time employment opportunities are scarce for accountants in the UK. Although many British organizations are now allowing some of their existing employees to work on a part-time basis, very few are looking for new employees who will only report for work several days a week. Management-level accounting professionals are finding it especially difficult to gain part-time employment because managerial positions are demanding and require full attention due to the heavy responsibilities they entail. Part-time jobs are easier to find for accountants in public practice because the audit and accountancy work they do are project-oriented. Two accountants who are happily employed on a part-time basis are profiled. Brian Walsh works with several small and mid-sized companies, while Roberta Herkes works four days a week at Grant Thornton's Oxford office.
