Ways to tap the best in Peps by phone
Article Abstract:
UK investors can buy personal equity plans (Peps) by phone as a simple way of purchasing Peps. Index tracker funds are an easy choice and are available from many companies including Virgin Direct and Legal and General by phone. Phone calls are recorded and investor protection applies. Investors can hang up if they do not like selling techniques or products on offer. Some major companies offer information over the phone but do not sell products, and their costs may be higher. Discount brokers may also be a useful way for investors to buy funds if they already know what they wish to buy.

Performance reporting that needs to be pepped up
Article Abstract:
There is a need for United Kingdom unit trusts to isue more data on performance. It is not enough to compare performance with a building society account or to gear reporting to show the effect of a brief period of strong performance. Investors should be able to examine individual years' performance figures, and they need data showing how the trust has performed compared to a particular class over a long period. A strong performance over a year may be simply due to luck, so longer term data are needed.

Closing the gap
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom investment trusts have seen widening discounts to an average of 12% in 1997. There is concern about the impact on small investors and parallels have been drawn with the 1980s and 1970s. Discounts are likely to narrow over the long term, and investment trusts themselves are bringing about rationalization in the industry. Rationalization is necessary due to an over-supply. Many new issues have been undertaken and not all of these have been successful.
