What makes that little telephone ring?
Article Abstract:
Direct Line Insurance has grown tremendously since its inception in 1985. Its gross premium income has reached 124.4 million pounds sterling in 1991 while gross assets are valued at 196.3 million pounds. Direct Line reports that the number of motor policies it has issued has already reached 550,000 with 186, 000 of these added only in 1991. While the amount of written premiums released in 1991 reached 84 million pounds, the company is aiming to achieve more than 150 million pounds in 1992. As a direct insurer, the company is reached by customers through the telephone. As a result, clients are handled by tele-service and tele-sales operators instead of insurance brokers. Direct Line is a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland and is managed by Peter Wood.

Offers for sale - there must be a better way!
Article Abstract:
When companies are taken private by a tender offer of securities in Great Britain, the valuation of the shares offered for the first time reflects an estimate of the shares worth had the company always been publicly traded, minus approximately 10 percent of this estimate to make the offering popular and another 5 percent to allow for deterioration of the market's conditions following the tender offer. Seven methods for improving this privatization technique are described, and a few of the 15 major privatizations that have occurred on London markets since March 1983 are detailed.
