When money does not matter
Article Abstract:
Building society and bank deposits in the United Kingdom are estimated to have dropped from May to Sep 1999. Meanwhile, lending by banks and building societies increased by some 4.5% annualized in the three months to Sep 1999. Mortgage lending has risen by 8.2% annualized in the three months to Jul 1999. It is unlikely that there will be insufficient funds for stock prices to rise since stock price changes tend to affect money holdings, rather than the other way round.

Looking on the bright side
Article Abstract:
UK corporate profit forecasts may be downgraded due to a forecast for slower economic growth than expected. The UK economy will grow by less than 3% in 1995, though previous forecasts had been for 4% growth. Profit forecasts for some sectors like building have been downgraded, though upgrades have also occurred in engineering. Efficiency gains are benefiting some companies by helping keep costs down so boosting operating profits.
