White sock envy at boom time for frock coats
Article Abstract:
Many different types of organisations call themselves a 'private bank,' but they have varying structures. They are all looking to benefit from one of the few expanding areas of the financial services industry, with the market expanding by 10-15 billion pounds sterling a year. Private banking can offer good profit opportunities for leading clearing banks facing financial difficulties elsewhere, especially as many wealthy people are now being more cautious and looking for ways to conserve their assets.

Offshore tax breaks cut but business thrives
Article Abstract:
Going offshore no longer offers many tax advantages to UK residents, as the regulatory regimes of many offshore havens are now much stricter than in the past. There is now little difference between onshore and offshore banking operations, especially at current interest rates. However, going offshore could still be attractive to people seeking private banking of the Swiss type, and the choice of a private bank could well be determined by its offshore connections.

Private banking takes off in London
Article Abstract:
The number of very wealthy people increased in the 1980s and this has helped the growth of private banking in the UK. The major clearing banks offer private banking divisions, as do merchant banks and specialist private banks. New companies are constantly appearing in London offering this service. Banks have developed a service-oriented approach and products are influenced by clients' demands, instead of being imposed by banks on their clients.
