Bank efficiency derived from the profit function
Article Abstract:
Article presents the idea that both input and output inefficiencies are derived from a profit function for US banks. In the study inefficiencies are decomposed into several allocative and technical components using directly estimable shadow prices. Results suggest that inefficiencies are quite large in US banking, giving the appearance that the industry loses about half of its potential variable profits to inefficiency.
